59 gamerules — click any to get full /gamerule syntax, Java & Bedrock edition notes, and related rules. Verified for 26.2.

Tip: gamerule IDs are case-sensitive in-game but this site accepts lowercase URLs — /gamerule/keepinventory redirects to the correct page automatically.

Boolean rules (true / false)

/gamerulekeep_inventorydefault: false

Controls whether players keep their items and XP when they die. When true, your inventory and experience are preserved on death — you respawn with everything intact.

boolean
/gamerulemob_griefingdefault: true

Controls whether mobs can modify blocks in the world. When false, creepers and TNT still explode but don't destroy blocks; endermen can't pick up blocks; wither can't break blocks; villagers can't farm.

boolean
/gameruleadvance_timedefault: true

Controls whether the sun and moon move through the sky. When false, time is frozen at whatever value it was when the rule was applied. Use /time set to control the frozen time.

boolean
/gameruleadvance_weatherdefault: true

Controls whether weather changes automatically over time. When false, whatever weather is currently active will remain indefinitely until you manually change it with /weather.

boolean
/gamerulenatural_health_regenerationdefault: true

Controls whether players regenerate health passively when their hunger bar is full. When false, players must rely on Regeneration potions, golden apples, or the Regeneration effect to heal.

boolean
/gamerulefall_damagedefault: true

Controls whether players and mobs take damage from falling. When false, no fall damage is dealt regardless of how far you fall.

boolean
/gameruleshow_death_messagesdefault: true

Controls whether player death messages appear in chat. When false, deaths are silent — no 'PlayerName was slain by Zombie' messages are broadcast.

boolean
/gamerulepvpdefault: true

Controls whether players can damage other players. When false, direct player-to-player combat is disabled.

boolean
/gamerulespawn_phantomsdefault: true

Controls whether phantoms spawn when players haven't slept for several in-game days. When false, phantoms never spawn from insomnia.

booleanJava only
/gameruleshow_advancement_messagesdefault: true

Controls whether advancement completions are announced in chat. When false, players earn advancements silently with no broadcast to the server.

booleanJava only
/gamerulespawn_mobsdefault: true

Controls whether mobs spawn naturally in the world. When false, no hostile or passive mobs spawn naturally. Mobs spawned via /summon or spawn eggs are unaffected.

boolean
/gameruleentity_dropsdefault: true

Controls whether entities drop items when they die. When false, mobs and players drop nothing on death — no loot, no XP, no dropped equipment.

boolean
/gamerulemob_dropsdefault: true

Controls whether mobs drop loot when killed. Specifically targets mob loot tables — not player drops or entity equipment.

boolean
/gameruleblock_dropsdefault: true

Controls whether blocks drop items when broken. When false, breaking blocks yields nothing — useful for clearing large areas cleanly.

boolean
/gamerulecommand_block_outputdefault: true

Controls whether command blocks send output messages to chat when they execute. Useful for reducing chat spam from automated command block systems.

boolean
/gamerulesend_command_feedbackdefault: true

Controls whether commands send feedback messages to the executing player. When false, successful commands execute silently.

boolean
/gameruleraidsdefault: true

Controls whether raids can occur. When false, raids are completely disabled — players with Bad Omen entering a village will not trigger a raid. Note: this rule is inverted from the old disableRaids rule (disableRaids true = raids false now).

booleanJava only
/gameruleimmediate_respawndefault: false

Controls whether players respawn immediately after death, skipping the death screen. When true, you are instantly returned to your spawn point.

boolean
/gamerulefreeze_damagedefault: true

Controls whether players and mobs take damage from being in powder snow. When false, entities can stand in powder snow indefinitely without freezing.

booleanJava only
/gameruleuniversal_angerdefault: false

Controls whether neutral mobs become angry at all nearby players when one player provokes them. When true, angering one mob causes all nearby neutral mobs of the same type to target all players.

booleanJava only
/gamerulespectators_generate_chunksdefault: true

Controls whether players in spectator mode cause chunks to load. When false, spectators can fly through the world without loading new chunks.

booleanJava only
/gamerulelocator_bardefault: true

Controls the locator bar UI element added in Java Edition 1.21.6. The locator bar shows the positions of nearby players on your HUD.

booleanJava only
/gameruleallow_entering_nether_using_portalsdefault: true

Controls whether players can use Nether portals to travel between dimensions. When false, standing in an active portal frame has no effect — the portal animates normally but no teleportation occurs.

booleanJava only
/gameruleblock_explosion_drop_decaydefault: true

Controls whether blocks destroyed by generic explosions (not TNT or mob explosions) have a random chance to drop items rather than always dropping. When true, only a fraction of blown-up blocks drop loot.

booleanJava only
/gamerulecommand_blocks_workdefault: true

Controls whether command blocks execute their stored commands. When false, command blocks are silenced — they receive redstone signals but do not run any commands.

booleanJava only
/gameruledrowning_damagedefault: true

Controls whether players and mobs take damage from drowning. When false, running out of breath underwater deals no damage — you can stay submerged indefinitely.

boolean
/gameruleelytra_movement_checkdefault: true

Controls whether the server validates elytra flight movement speed. Disabling this removes the server-side speed cap that can kick players for moving too fast during boosted elytra flight — useful for high-latency servers or modded movement.

booleanJava only
/gameruleender_pearls_vanish_on_deathdefault: true

Controls whether in-flight ender pearls are destroyed when the player who threw them dies. When false, pearls continue flying after the thrower's death and still teleport on impact.

booleanJava only
/gamerulefire_damagedefault: true

Controls whether fire and lava deal damage to players and mobs. When false, walking through fire or standing in lava deals no damage — useful for creative builds or fire-themed maps.

boolean
/gameruleforgive_dead_playersdefault: true

Controls whether angered neutral mobs forget their target when that player dies. When true, a wolf or piglin that was chasing you stops targeting you after you die and respawn.

booleanJava only
/gameruleglobal_sound_eventsdefault: true

Controls whether significant boss-level events play their sound globally for all players regardless of distance. Affected events include the Wither spawning, the Ender Dragon dying, and similar.

booleanJava only
/gamerulelava_source_conversiondefault: false

Controls whether flowing lava can generate new lava source blocks — similar to how water sources are created. When true, two converging lava flows can form a new source, making lava renewable. Most useful in Dripstone Caves biomes.

booleanJava only
/gamerulelimited_craftingdefault: false

Controls whether players can only craft items whose recipe they have unlocked. When true, undiscovered recipes are unavailable in the crafting grid — useful for progression-based adventure maps.

booleanJava only
/gamerulelog_admin_commandsdefault: true

Controls whether commands run by server operators are written to the server log. When false, OP commands are not recorded — useful for privacy on servers where staff activity should not be publicly auditable.

booleanJava only
/gamerulemob_explosion_drop_decaydefault: true

Controls whether blocks destroyed by mob explosions (creepers, ghasts, the Wither, etc.) have a reduced chance of dropping items. When true, only a fraction of blocks drop; when false, all destroyed blocks drop.

booleanJava only
/gameruleplayer_movement_checkdefault: true

Controls whether the server validates player movement. When false, the server accepts all position packets without speed checks — preventing false "moved too quickly" kicks from high latency, speed boosts, or custom mechanics.

booleanJava only
/gameruleprojectiles_can_break_blocksdefault: true

Controls whether projectiles (arrows, snowballs, tridents, etc.) can destroy certain blocks on impact — including chorus flowers, pointed dripstone, and decorated pots. Disabling preserves these blocks from accidental projectile damage.

booleanJava only
/gamerulereduced_debug_infodefault: false

Controls whether the F3 debug screen shows reduced information. When true, the HUD omits player coordinates, facing direction, biome, and other technical details — useful for streaming, screenshots, or adventure maps where coordinates should be hidden.

booleanJava only
/gamerulespawn_monstersdefault: true

Controls whether hostile monsters (zombies, skeletons, creepers, etc.) spawn naturally in the world. Unlike spawn_mobs, this targets only hostile mobs — passive animals continue to spawn normally when this is false.

booleanJava only
/gamerulespawn_patrolsdefault: true

Controls whether pillager patrol groups spawn in the Overworld. Patrols are groups of 2–5 pillagers that roam and attack players on sight. Disabling prevents patrols without affecting all monster spawning.

booleanJava only
/gamerulespawn_wandering_tradersdefault: true

Controls whether wandering traders spawn randomly near the player. Wandering traders appear periodically and sell rare items like plants and dyes. Disabling prevents them without affecting other mob spawning.

booleanJava only
/gamerulespawn_wardensdefault: true

Controls whether Wardens can spawn from Sculk Shriekers in Ancient Cities. When false, Shriekers still emit their warning effect and vibrations, but will never summon a Warden regardless of alert count.

booleanJava only
/gamerulespawner_blocks_workdefault: true

Controls whether monster spawner blocks produce mobs. When false, all spawners in the world are silenced — they still display their spinning entity model but no mobs emerge.

booleanJava only
/gamerulespread_vinesdefault: true

Controls whether vines spread to adjacent blocks over time. When false, existing vine blocks remain in place but will not grow or expand — useful for keeping jungle builds tidy or preventing vines from overrunning structures.

booleanJava only
/gameruletnt_explodesdefault: true

Controls whether TNT detonates when ignited. When false, TNT can be placed and ignited — it flashes and hisses — but produces no explosion. The block simply disappears with no damage.

boolean
/gameruletnt_explosion_drop_decaydefault: true

Controls whether blocks destroyed by TNT explosions have a random chance to drop items rather than always dropping. When true, only a fraction of blocks near a blast drop loot — consistent with the explosion drop formula added in Java 1.20.

booleanJava only
/gamerulewater_source_conversiondefault: true

Controls whether two converging water flows can generate a new water source block. When false, water behaves like lava — it flows but cannot create new sources, making water management far more difficult.

booleanJava only

Integer rules (numeric value)

/gamerulerandom_tick_speeddefault: 3

Controls how many random block ticks occur per game tick. Higher values speed up crop growth, fire spread, grass spreading, and leaf decay. Set to 0 to disable all random block ticks.

integer
/gameruleplayers_sleeping_percentagedefault: 100

Controls what percentage of players must sleep to skip the night. At 0, a single player sleeping skips the night for everyone. At 100 (default), all players must sleep.

integer
/gamerulemax_entity_crammingdefault: 24

Controls how many entities can occupy the same block before entities above the limit start taking suffocation damage. Set to 0 to disable cramming damage entirely.

integerJava only
/gamerulerespawn_radiusdefault: 10

Controls the radius around the world spawn point in which players can randomly spawn on first join or after death (when no individual spawn point is set).

integer
/gamerulefire_spread_radius_around_playerdefault: 0

Sets the radius (in blocks) around each player in which fire is prevented from spreading. A value of 0 disables the feature — fire spreads normally. Setting this higher creates a personal fire-free zone around each player.

integerJava only
/gamerulemax_block_modificationsdefault: 32768

Sets the maximum number of blocks that a single command (/fill, /setblock, etc.) can modify in one tick. Increasing this allows larger fill operations; lowering it protects server performance from oversized commands.

integerJava only
/gamerulemax_command_forksdefault: 65536

Sets the maximum number of execution forks in a single function call or command chain. A fork occurs when a command runs multiple times (e.g., /execute as @a forks once per player). Lowering this protects against runaway command loops.

integerJava only
/gamerulemax_command_sequence_lengthdefault: 65536

Sets the maximum number of commands that can execute in a single function chain before it terminates. Prevents infinite loops inside function files from hanging the server.

integerJava only
/gamerulemax_minecart_speeddefault: 8

Sets the maximum speed of minecarts in blocks per second. The vanilla default is 8. Increasing this allows rail systems to move much faster; decreasing it slows minecarts down.

integerJava only
/gamerulemax_snow_accumulation_heightdefault: 1

Sets the maximum number of snow layers that can accumulate from natural snowfall. The default of 1 means only a single layer per block. Setting this to 8 allows full snow block depth to build up over time during storms.

integerJava only
/gameruleplayers_nether_portal_creative_delaydefault: 1

Sets the number of ticks a creative mode player must stand in a Nether portal before being teleported. The default is 1 tick (nearly instant). Set higher to add a deliberate delay for creative players.

integerJava only
/gameruleplayers_nether_portal_default_delaydefault: 80

Sets the number of ticks a survival mode player must stand in a Nether portal before being teleported. The vanilla default is 80 ticks (4 seconds). Reduce this to speed up portal travel; increase it for a longer wait.
